Test Overview

What Is the Anti Cardiolipin IgA Test?

The Anti Cardiolipin IgA test looks for IgA class antibodies against cardiolipin, a type of phospholipid in cell membranes. These antibodies are part of the antiphospholipid family, strongly tied to Antiphospholipid Syndrome (APS). APS boosts the chances of blood clots and problems during pregnancy.

Doctors usually check Anti Cardiolipin IgA along with Anti Cardiolipin IgG and Anti Cardiolipin IgM to get a full picture. The total Cardiolipin Ab IgA IgG IgM panel covers all bases with these immunoglobulins. This combo helps docs see if there's a higher risk of repeated blood clots or pregnancy loss. So, if your doc suggests antiphospholipid tests, expect to do the Anti Cardiolipin IgM test too, for a thorough diagnosis.

Why Is the Anti Cardiolipin IgA Test Done?

  • The test is ordered when a doctor suspects a person may also have APS or other auto-immune disorders. The anticardiolipin IgA antibody is also detectable when IgG and IgM antibody levels are negative, so it is also a significant marker to be considered.
  • This test is ordered to:
  • Look into blood clots that do not form for an explanation.
  • Assess recurrent miscarriages/pregnancy complications
  • Diagnose or rule out Antiphospholipid Syndrome (APS)
  • Monitor patients already diagnosed with autoimmune diseases such as lupus (SLE)
  • Evaluate low platelet count with no clear cause (thrombocytopenia).
  • In addition, anti cardiolipin ab IgM RDL and B2 glycoprotein I IgA Ab are requested, which will be supplied to support the evaluation.

Benefits of the Anti Cardiolipin IgA Test

  • The reasons for getting an anti cardiolipin IgA test are important, both for the clinical profile and for personal health:
  • Prenatal diagnosis of APS to prevent serious clotting before onset of pregnancy
  • Assists in making decisions with your doctor about how to manage your blood thinner therapy
  • Recognizes obstetric care planning considerations related to antibodies during pregnancy
  • When used in conjunction with cardiolipin ab IgM positive, provides a full picture
  • Helps to diagnose accurately, exclude other causes of clotting or pregnancy loss
  • Minimises chronic health hazards by initiating appropriate and focused medical care at the appropriate time

Symptoms or Conditions That May Require This Test

Your doctor might order an anti cardiolipin IgA test if you have a history of or any of the following signs:

  • Recurrent miscarriages (2 or more unexplained pregnancy loss)
  • Pulmonary embolism or deep vein thrombosis (DVT) for no apparent reason
  • Minor stroke or Stroke, particularly in younger people
  • Livedo reticularis (a mottled skin pattern that is associated with vascular problems)
  • Low platelets that are not caused by another medical condition.
  • Antiphospholipid antibody (positive lupus anticoagulant or other antiphospholipid marker)
  • Family history of clotting disorders or autoimmune diseases.

Anticardiolipin IgA high level may be found as part of a broader autoimmune evaluation, and is often combined with other antibodies such as B2 glycoprotein I IgA Ab and cardiolipin ab IgM, for a comprehensive evaluation.

Test Preparation of Anticardiolipin IgA

The anti cardiolipin IgA test can be performed with very little preparation and is easy for the patient to do:

It is not usually necessary to fast for this test

Let your doctor know if you are taking any other medications, especially blood-thinning medicines (anticoagulants) like warfarin or heparin, which can affect results.

Don't have the test when you are suffering from an acute illness or infection, as this could temporarily impact your antibody levels.

A follow-up test is almost always repeated after 12 weeks if you are being tested as a follow-up to confirm the persistence of antibody positivity as outlined in the APS diagnostic criteria.

At JDAR Path Lab, we have professional phlebotomists who make the process of sample collection a comfortable and hygienic one. For your convenience, home collection is also available.

Sample Required

A small sample of venous blood is drawn from a vein in your arm. The blood is collected in a plain or gel-separator tube and sent to our accredited laboratory for analysis. The procedure is quick, minimally invasive, and takes only a few minutes.

Understanding the Results

The results are expressed in the form of a titer (measured value) and are considered negative, low positive, medium positive or high positive. The normal range for cardiolipin ab IgA is <12 APL-U/mL, but it can be slightly different depending on the laboratory method used.

The results you may get:

Negative result: Anticardiolipin IgA antibodies are not being detected, and therefore APS is not likely to be present on the basis of this test alone.

Low positive: Needs clinical correlation, repeat testing 12 weeks post

Medium to high positive (anticardiolipin IgA high): Clinically significant - linked to a higher risk of thrombosis and pregnancy complications; medical assessment is recommended.

Having a positive test result does not necessarily mean APS is confirmed. Diagnosis should be made with clinical signs and lab results. Your doctor will take the test result into account along with other blood tests and your symptoms to interpret the results, such as the cardiolipin Ab IgM, cardiolipin Ab IgG, and B2 glycoprotein I IgA Ab.

Equally important, when both antibody testing results are positive, the diagnosis of cardiolipin antibody IgM positive and anti-cardiolipin ab IgM RDL are considered simultaneously to plan for comprehensive treatment.

Our Story - A Lab Built on One Doctor's Passion

JDAR did not start as a big corporate chain. It started with one person who genuinely cared. Dr. (Mrs.) Urmil Goel, M.B.B.S., M.D. (Pathology), founded JDAR in 1983 with a simple but powerful belief - that patients deserve quality diagnostic care in a premium, comfortable setting. With over 40 years of hands-on experience in Hematology, Histopathology, and Clinical Pathology, Dr. Urmil Goel built this lab from the ground up. Her dedication is the reason JDAR holds NABL accreditation and meets international quality standards today.

In 2005, her son Dr. Saurabh Goel, M.D. (Microbiology), joined the laboratory. He brought with him fresh expertise in Microbiology and Immuno-Assays, along with a focus on faster report delivery and better patient communication. Under his leadership, JDAR embraced modern diagnostic technology while never losing the personal touch that made it special. Today, this Pathology lab in New Delhi is run by a family that does not just manage a business they take ownership of your health, report by report.
