A thyroid profile is a set of blood tests that are used to determine the function of the thyroid. The thyroid gland is a small, butterfly-shaped gland in the front of the neck. It secretes two main hormones - Thyroxine (T4) and Triiodothyronine (T3) - that regulate energy production, the heart rate, the body temperature and growth and development of the body.
This blood test for thyroid profile includes three hormones in one sample T3 Total, T4 Total and TSH (Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone) Ultrasensitive. These values, combined with each other, provide your doctor with the most complete picture of your thyroid health, making it easier to diagnose possible thyroid overactivity (hyperthyroidism) or underactivity (hypothyroidism), autoimmune thyroid diseases, and other thyroid-related conditions.
The thyroid profile total (which reflects all three parameters at once) is the best initial and follow-up test to check the thyroid.
The complete thyroid profile test covers the following three parameters:
There are two main hormones that the thyroid makes: T3 and T4. It is directly involved in the regulation of metabolism, heart rate, body temperature and activity of all organ systems. Abnormal T3 levels can indicate hyperthyroidism (elevated T3) or hypothyroidism (low T3). In adults, the normal range for Total T3 is 0.6 1.81 ng/mL.
The other major thyroid hormone is T4 (thyroxine). Most T4 in the blood is bound to proteins; it is converted to the more active T3 in peripheral tissues. High T4 could suggest hyperthyroidism and low T4 is a characteristic of hypothyroidism. Normal serum Total T4 levels are 4.5-12.5 g/dl in adults.
TSH is manufactured by the pituitary gland and is known as the master regulator of thyroid activity, telling the thyroid to make more or less T3 and T4. The Ultrasensitive TSH test is the most sensitive thyroid test for diagnosing thyroid dysfunction as it is able to detect even the smallest changes in TSH level. Normal TSH range: 0.44.0 mIU/L. High TSH is a sign of hypothyroidism, low TSH is a sign of hyperthyroidism.
This thyroid panel test is also known as Thyroid Health Panel because testing all three thyroid hormones at once provides a more comprehensive and accurate picture than any one thyroid test.
Who Should Get a Thyroid Profile Test?
Your doctor may order an extensive thyroid test or thyroid function test panel if you have any of the following symptoms or are at high risk:
Excessive weight gain with a normal diet
Fatigue, weakness or low energy that lasts longer than normal
Cold intolerance to hot temperatures
Dry skin, brittle nails or thinning/falling hair
Depression, brain fog, or impaired concentration.
Swelling of eyelids and around the eyes
Heavy and painful periods
Loss of consciousness or seizures
Faster than normal breathing (hyperventilation)
Nervousness, anxiety or irritability
A lump in the front of the neck that is felt or can be seen (goitre)
Frequent bowel movements or diarrhoea
Over 35 years old women are 58 times more likely to get thyroid disease than men.
Adults above 40 years as part of a routine health check-up
Thyroid hormones are required for brain growth in unborn children and pregnant women
People taking thyroid hormone supplements or who have been treated for an iodine deficiency.
Diabetics, anaemics and autoimmune sufferers
People who are taking thyroid medicines and whose medication needs to be reviewed at certain times
The thyroid profile blood test is easy to prepare, but the following tips will help you get the best results:
Although fasting is not always necessary, it is suggested to have a fasting thyroid profile (eating and drinking nothing except water 8 hours before the test) to get the most accurate TSH measurement, particularly if your doctor is concerned you may have a borderline abnormality.
Medications you might be taking: If you are taking a thyroid medication like levothyroxine, do not take the medication on the morning of the test after your blood sample was taken (unless your doctor says otherwise).
Biotin supplements: Withhold biotin (Vitamin B7) for 72 hours prior to the test because it can affect thyroid hormone test results.
Morning collection is preferred as TSH levels of the body naturally fluctuate throughout the day and are normally higher in the morning. A morning booking ensures consistency of results in repeated tests.
No special diet restrictions: No specific foods need to be avoided prior to the thyroid panel test, other than following the guidelines for fasting provided above.

Her dedication is the reason JDAR holds NABL accreditation and meets international quality standards today.
In 2005, her son Dr. Saurabh Goel, M.D. (Microbiology), joined the laboratory. He brought with him fresh expertise in Microbiology and Immuno-Assays, along with a focus on faster report delivery and better patient communication. Under his leadership, JDAR embraced modern diagnostic technology while never losing the personal touch that made it special.
