Your immune system is built to protect you. It fights bacteria, viruses, and anything that does not belong in your body.
But sometimes, it makes a mistake.
It starts producing antibodies against your own cells, cells that were never a threat. This is called an autoimmune response. And it can cause real harm if it goes undetected.
A simple blood test can catch this early. It tells your doctor exactly what is happening inside your body, before a bigger problem develops.
This page explains everything in plain language. What the test is. Why it is done. What your results mean: No medical jargon. No confusion.
The Anti Phospholipid IgG + IgM test is a blood test. It looks for two specific antibodies in your blood, IgG and IgM.
These antibodies target something called phospholipids.
Phospholipids are fatty substances. They are found in the walls of your cells. They also help control how your blood clots.
In a healthy person, the immune system ignores phospholipids completely. It knows they belong there.
But in some people, the immune system gets confused. It starts attacking phospholipids as if they were a threat. The antibodies it produces are called antiphospholipid antibodies, or aPL antibodies.
When these antibodies build up in your blood, they interfere with normal clotting. This can lead to blood clots forming where they should not. In pregnant women, it can also cause repeated pregnancy loss.
This is why doctors test for both IgG and IgM together. The combined test, also known as the Phospholipid Antibody Panel - IgG & IgM, gives a fuller picture in a single blood draw. Testing one without the other can sometimes miss the problem.
You can learn more about the individual components: Anti Phospholipid IgG and Anti Phospholipid IgM are also available as standalone tests at JDAR Path Lab.
Your doctor orders the APL IgG IgM blood test when something does not add up.
Maybe you had an unexplained blood clot. Maybe you lost a pregnancy more than once. Maybe a routine test came back unusual. In all these cases, your doctor wants to rule out one condition, Antiphospholipid Syndrome, or APS. APS makes your blood clot too easily. In pregnant women, it can also cause pregnancy loss.
Here is when your doctor may order this test:
Talk to your doctor if you notice any of these signs:
These signs do not mean you have APS. But they do mean your doctor should take a closer look.
The sooner you test, the sooner you get answers. And early answers lead to better treatment.
Fast overnight: Do not eat or drink anything, except water, after midnight before your test.
Tell your doctor about your medicines: Are you taking blood thinners, steroids, or any immunity-related medicines? Let your doctor know. These can affect your results.
Had a recent illness? A current or recent infection can temporarily raise antibody levels. This may give a false result. Your doctor may ask you to wait and retest once you recover.
That is all. No special preparation needed beyond this.

The table below shows standard reference ranges for the Anti Phospholipid IgG + IgM test:
| Antibody Type | Normal (Negative) | Borderline | Positive |
| Anti Phospholipid IgG | < 10 GPL Units/mL | 10–15 GPL Units/mL | > 15 GPL Units/mL |
| Anti Phospholipid IgM | < 10 MPL Units/mL | 10–15 MPL Units/mL | > 15 MPL Units/mL |
What does a positive IgG and IgM result mean? It means these antibodies are present in your blood at a level that raises concern. But one positive test is not enough to diagnose APS. Doctors need two positive results, at least 12 weeks apart, along with a clinical event like a blood clot or pregnancy loss.
Anti phospholipid IgG normal range Below 10 GPL Units/mL, negative. 10 to 15 GPL Units/mL, borderline. Repeat testing may be needed. Above 15 GPL Units/mL, positive.
Anti phospholipid IgM normal range Below 10 MPL Units/mL, negative. 10 to 15 MPL Units/mL, borderline. Repeat testing may be needed. Above 15 MPL Units/mL, positive.
What is the difference between IgM and IgG? IgM appears first. It often signals an early or active immune response. IgG appears later, and stays longer. It is more strongly linked to blood clots and pregnancy loss. Testing both together in the aPL IgG + IgM antibody panel gives your doctor the clearest picture.
Please do not read your report alone. Numbers mean different things depending on your symptoms and history. Always share your results with your doctor.

Her dedication is the reason JDAR holds NABL accreditation and meets international quality standards today.
In 2005, her son Dr. Saurabh Goel, M.D. (Microbiology), joined the laboratory. He brought with him fresh expertise in Microbiology and Immuno-Assays, along with a focus on faster report delivery and better patient communication. Under his leadership, JDAR embraced modern diagnostic technology while never losing the personal touch that made it special.
