Your body has a built-in defence system. It makes antibodies proteins that fight off infections and keep you healthy. But sometimes, the immune system gets confused. Instead of protecting you, it starts attacking your own body.
The anti DS DNA test looks for this problem.
It checks for antibodies that are targeting something they should never touch your own DNA. When this happens, it causes inflammation throughout the body. And that inflammation is the hallmark of a condition called lupus or Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, to use its full name.
Lupus is a serious autoimmune condition. It can affect the skin, joints, kidneys, and other organs.
What makes the anti DS DNA particularly useful is how specific it is. Most autoimmune tests can point to several different conditions. This one points strongly and directly to lupus giving your doctor a much clearer starting point.
Your doctor may also recommend the ANTI CCP test, the ANTI TPO test, or the Anti Phospholipid IgG + IgM test to build a more complete picture of your immune system's activity.
Lupus can be difficult to identify. Its symptoms overlap with many other conditions which is why the anti DS DNA plays such an important role. It helps your doctor move from uncertainty to clarity.
Your doctor may order this test to:
Rising levels of the anti DS DNA antibody often signal a lupus flare before it becomes severe. This makes the test valuable not just at the point of diagnosis, but throughout long-term patient care.
Finding out early makes all the difference. Here is what the anti DS DNA test can do for you.
It gives your doctor a clear answer: This test points more directly to lupus than most other autoimmune tests. A positive result gives your doctor solid, reliable grounds to confirm the diagnosis and stop guessing.
It warns you before a flare hits: Lupus flares, sudden periods when symptoms get much worse, do not always appear without warning. Antibody levels often rise before the flare becomes severe. Regular monitoring means your doctor can step in early, before things get out of hand.
It keeps a close watch on your kidneys: Lupus can damage the kidneys, and this is one of its most serious complications. Elevated anti-DS DNA levels are closely linked to this risk. The test helps your doctor catch kidney involvement early, when it is still manageable.
It tells you whether your treatment is working: As treatment takes effect, these antibody levels typically come down. If they do not, your doctor knows something needs to change before more damage is done.
It brings clarity when the diagnosis is uncertain: Sometimes symptoms point to many things at once. This test helps your doctor confidently say whether lupus is the cause or rule it out and look elsewhere. Either way, you get answers faster.
Lupus is not easy to spot. It can look and feel like many other conditions which is why so many people live with unexplained symptoms for a long time before getting a clear answer.
If any of the following sound familiar, your doctor may recommend the anti DS DNA test:
None of these symptoms tell the full story on their own. Lupus rarely announces itself clearly. But when your doctor sees these signs alongside a positive anti DS DNA result, the picture comes together and the right care can finally begin.
Good news - this test needs very little preparation. You do not need to rearrange your day for it.
You can eat and drink normally beforehand. No fasting needed. Just make sure you are well-hydrated on the day - it makes the blood draw quicker and more comfortable for you.
If you are on any medicines - particularly steroids or drugs that affect your immune system - let your doctor know before the test. Some of these can influence your result, and your doctor will want to take that into account.
Try to keep the day before your test fairly relaxed. Heavy exercise is best avoided for 24 hours beforehand. Light activity is completely fine.
And if you have had this test done before, bring those old reports with you. Seeing how your levels have changed over time often tells your doctor more than any single result can.
Still have questions? Our team at JDAR Path Lab is always happy to help you feel ready before you come in.
This test needs just a small sample of blood - nothing more.
A trained professional draws it from a vein in your forearm. It takes only a few minutes. Most people barely feel it - just a quick, slight pinch, and it is done.
Not keen on travelling to the lab? JDAR Path Lab comes to you. We offer home sample collection across select areas in New Delhi. A certified professional visits your home or workplace - at a time that fits your day, not the other way around. Clean, safe, and completely worry-free.
Your result will be reported in IU/mL - international units per milliliter. Here is what the anti DS DNA normal range looks like, and what each level means:
| Result | IU/mL Range | What It Means | What Happens Next |
| Negative | < 10 IU/mL | No significant antibody detected | Normal monitor if symptoms persist |
| Borderline | 10 – 15 IU/mL | Mildly elevated — inconclusive | Repeat test advised |
| Positive | > 15 IU/mL | Elevated — linked to lupus activity | Clinical review and further tests needed |
| Strongly Positive | High titre | Strongly associated with active lupus | Immediate specialist referral |
What does the normal range look like? A result below 10 IU/mL is normal for most people it means no significant antibody activity was detected. If your result falls between 10 and 15 IU/mL, it is borderline — not clearly positive, not clearly negative. Your doctor will likely ask you to repeat the test before drawing any conclusions. A result above 15 IU/mL is considered positive and will need a full review with your doctor.
What if your levels are high? Can they come down? Yes, in many cases they can. Elevated levels are usually managed by treating the underlying condition most often lupus. Your specialist may prescribe antimalarial medicines, steroids, or other medications to calm the immune system's activity. Alongside medication, small lifestyle adjustments like protecting your skin from sun exposure and avoiding known triggers can also help keep the condition more stable over time. But any changes to your treatment must come from your doctor. Never adjust your medicines based on a test result alone.
One important thing to remember. A number on a page does not tell your whole story. Your doctor will look at your result together with your symptoms, your history, and any other tests you have had. That full picture is what leads to the right decision, not the result in isolation.

Her dedication is the reason JDAR holds NABL accreditation and meets international quality standards today.
In 2005, her son Dr. Saurabh Goel, M.D. (Microbiology), joined the laboratory. He brought with him fresh expertise in Microbiology and Immuno-Assays, along with a focus on faster report delivery and better patient communication. Under his leadership, JDAR embraced modern diagnostic technology while never losing the personal touch that made it special.
