What Is a Kidney Function Test?

A Kidney Function Test, known as the Kidney Function Panel, Renal Function Test (RFT), or KFT, is an overall test that uses both blood and urine analysis to measure the efficacy with which your kidneys are filtering the waste products and managing your body's electrolyte balance and fluid levels. Here at JDAR Path Lab, we offer the complete Kidney Health Assessment Package that provides you with a detailed kidney diagnostics test report.

Your kidneys carry out several important functions each day, including the removal of metabolic wastes like urea, creatinine, and uric acid, fluid regulation, blood pressure regulation, production of hormones like Erythropoietin and Renin, and activation of Vitamin D. Any dysfunction with these activities may lead to a condition called Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). Unfortunately, this process takes place quietly without any symptoms showing up, which makes a Kidney Function Test critical.

Why Is a Kidney Function Test Important?

Renal problems are usually referred to as the "silent disease" because by the time patients notice any signs, serious, and at times permanent, damage may have already occurred. Through a KFT, it will be possible to detect these problems early and begin administering the necessary precautionary treatment while staging the problem appropriately.

It will be wise for you to get a Kidney Diagnostic Test if you have any of the following conditions:

• Diabetes mellitus (both type 1 and type 2 diabetes)

• Hypertension (high blood pressure)

• History of renal disease or polycystic renal disease in your family

• Renal infections and stones

• Symptoms such as edema in the legs, general tiredness, foamy urine, or decreased urination

• Nephrotoxic drugs such as NSAIDS and antibiotics

• Obesity or metabolic syndromes

• Old age (above 60)

Also, a KFT is prescribed in case of surgery, during pregnancy, and in cases where there are pre-existing renal diseases.

What Does the Kidney Function Panel Include?

The KFT at JDAR Path Lab is a Kidney Function Panel that covers the following key biomarkers:

1. Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN)

The urea is a product of protein metabolism in the body. It is normally filtered by the kidney from the blood and removed from the body through urine. An elevated BUN level is an early sign of impaired kidney functioning; however, its levels may be increased by dehydration and/or diet factors.

2. Serum Creatinine

Creatinine is a metabolite of muscle metabolism. Since creatinine is constantly filtered out of the blood by the kidneys, high creatinine levels indicate defective kidney function. This is one of the main criteria used to assess kidney disease.

3. Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate (EGFR)

The EGFR is the benchmark test used to evaluate kidney health. This test uses serum creatinine values, age, gender, and body surface area to measure the amount of blood cleaned by the kidneys each minute in millilitres. A healthy EGFR is equal to or above 90mL/min/1.73m²; those less than 60 for at least three months show CKD.

4. Uric Acid

Uric acid is formed during the process by which purines – organic molecules present in some foods and in our bodies – are broken down by the body. Uric acid is excreted from the body through the urinary system. High levels of uric acid may cause gout and kidney stones.

5. Electrolytes - Sodium, Potassium, Chloride

Electrolyte levels in the bloodstream are controlled by the kidneys. Elevated sodium suggests the presence of fluid retention problems, excess potassium (hyperkalemia) is an extremely hazardous condition that arises due to chronic kidney ailments, and the imbalance of chloride can reveal acid-base problems.

6. Serum Albumin

Albumin is the most prevalent protein in the blood. Damage to the kidney will cause it to start leaking proteins, causing the body to have low levels of serum albumin. The presence of albumin in urine is a good indication of damage to the kidney.

7. Calcium and Phosphorus

Functionally, the kidneys serve an important role in the activation of vitamin D as well as in maintaining a proper calcium/phosphorus balance. Patients suffering from CKD show elevated blood phosphorus and decreased calcium levels.

How to Prepare for Your Kidney Function Test

Proper preparation will guarantee correct findings in your Kidney Diagnostic Test report. Ensure that you adhere to the following rules:

• Do not eat for at least 8-10 hours prior to conducting the test (but water intake is allowed)

• Stay properly hydrated, because dehydration causes an increase in BUN and creatinine results

• Do not have foods that contain a lot of proteins the night before the test

• Let your physician know of all the drugs you are taking, such as NSAIDS, antibiotics, ACE inhibitors, or diuretics

• Do not undertake vigorous exercises 24 hours prior to the sample collection

Sample Collection Procedure

Kidney Function Test needs a small amount of blood sample to be withdrawn from the vein on the arm. This process only takes 5-10 minutes and the steps involved are:

• An expert phlebotomist applies an antiseptic wipe to the area above the vein to clean the skin

• A thin needle is placed into the vein, normally in the crook of the elbow

• Blood sample is withdrawn into the collection tube

• Needle is withdrawn and a cotton swab or bandage is placed.

We also provide sample collection at your doorstep at JDAR Path Lab. Simply book your appointment with us and get visited by our phlebotomist at your convenient place and time.

Understanding Your Kidney Function Test Report

The Kidney Function Test Report you receive at the JDAR Path Lab will include information regarding the parameter tested, your test results, and the normal range.

When interpreting your kidney function test report, you need to note:

• Results that are outside the normal range in the kidney function test results an individual abnormal result may not mean you have a problem

• Patterns that emerge over time – a decrease in your eGFR over several months may be more telling than an abnormal one-time result

• The association between parameters – such as high creatinine, low eGFR, and high potassium levels, which means that something is wrong with your kidneys

• External factors that could affect the results, such as dehydration, exercise, or medication

You should always provide your kidney function panel report to your doctor or nephrologist to interpret your results along with other relevant findings, including your blood pressure measurements and urine analysis.
