Test Overview

Your blood carries more information than you might expect. One thing doctors check for is the Hepatitis B surface antigen, also called the Australia antigen. This test tells your doctor whether a Hepatitis B infection is currently present in your body. It is usually one of the first signs that shows up in the blood, often weeks before you feel any symptoms.

If your doctor has ordered this test, here is what you should know.

What is the Australia Antigen test?

The Australia antigen is another name for the Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg). The name comes from the 1960s, when this antigen was first found in the blood of an Australian Aboriginal person.

The test checks whether this antigen is present in your blood. If it is, the Hepatitis B virus is active in your body. A positive result does not mean you will have the infection for life. Some people clear the virus within a few months. Others develop a long-term condition that needs regular monitoring and treatment.

This is a simple blood test. A small sample is taken from a vein in your arm. The lab looks for the antigen directly in the sample, which makes the result accurate and reliable.

Why is the Australia Antigen test done?

Doctors order this test for several reasons.

1. You have symptoms. If your skin or eyes look yellow, your urine is dark, or you feel unusually tired, your doctor will order this test right away.

2. Before a medical procedure If you are having surgery, dialysis, or a blood transfusion, this test is done first. It keeps you and the medical team safe.

3. During pregnancy Every pregnant woman is tested for hepatitis B. The virus can pass from mother to baby during delivery.

4. You are at higher risk Some people are tested regularly even without symptoms, healthcare workers, people with multiple sexual partners, and anyone who has shared needles.

If you have already had a hepatitis B vaccine, this test can confirm whether your body developed protection or needs a booster.

What are the symptoms that may require this test?

Hepatitis B does not always cause obvious symptoms early on. But when symptoms do appear, they usually include:

1. Yellowing of the skin and eyes This is called jaundice. The whites of your eyes may also turn yellow.

2. Unusual tiredness You feel exhausted for no clear reason, and it does not go away for weeks.

3. Pain in the upper right abdomen A dull ache or discomfort on the right side of your stomach, just below the ribs.

4. Nausea and loss of appetite You may feel sick, vomit, or simply lose interest in food.

5. Dark urine Your urine may look dark yellow or brown, even when you are drinking enough water.

If you have any of these symptoms, speak to your doctor. The Australia antigen test is usually one of the first tests they will order.

What does a positive Australia antigen test mean?

A positive result means the hepatitis B surface antigen was found in your blood. This tells your doctor that the virus is currently active in your body.

However, it does not tell the full story on its own.

Your doctor will not be able to tell right away whether the infection is new or long-standing. To understand this better, they will order a few more tests alongside this one.

Tests your doctor may order next:

1. Liver Function Test This checks how well your liver is working and whether it has been affected.

2. hsCRP This looks at inflammation levels in your body.

These results together give your doctor a clearer picture of your condition and help them decide the right next step for you.

What does a negative result mean?

A negative result means the antigen was not found in your blood. This is the normal outcome.

It means one of two things:

  • You do not have a Hepatitis B infection
  • You had the infection in the past and your body has already cleared it

What is the normal range?

The normal result for this test is non-reactive (negative).

If your result comes back reactive (positive), your doctor will ask for more tests. A positive result always needs a proper follow-up before any conclusion is made.

Can australia antigen be treated?

Yes. In many cases, the body clears the virus on its own within six months. This is called an acute infection, and it often resolves without any medication.

For long-term infection, antiviral medicines help slow the virus down and reduce damage to the liver.

Is Hepatitis B 100% curable?

Not always.

  • Acute infection often clears completely on its own
  • Chronic infection is controlled with medication rather than fully cured

The good news is that early detection makes a big difference. The sooner the infection is found, the better the chances of managing it before serious liver damage occurs. The Australia antigen test is one of the earliest ways to catch it.

What are the 7 types of hepatitis?

Hepatitis means inflammation of the liver. There are seven known types - A, B, C, D, E, F, and G.

Among these, Hepatitis B and C are the most serious. Both can lead to long-term liver disease if not detected early.

The Australia antigen test is used specifically to screen for Hepatitis B.

How to prepare for the test

Preparation is simple. There is no strict fasting needed for this test alone.

However, if your doctor has ordered this test along with a Lipid Profile, Triglycerides, or HDL Cholesterol test, they may ask you to fast beforehand.

Before the test, tell your doctor:

  • What medicines you are currently taking
  • Any supplements or herbal remedies you use

Some medications can affect liver markers and may change how your results are read.

What happens during the test?

A small amount of blood is drawn from a vein in your arm. The whole procedure takes less than five minutes.

Benefits of the australia antigen test

Finding the infection early gives your doctor more options and gives you a better outcome.

If your result comes back positive early, your doctor can:

1. Start treatment on time Antiviral medicines can be started before the liver is seriously damaged.

2. Protect the people around you Close family members and contacts can be vaccinated before they are exposed.

3. Monitor your liver closely Follow-up tests like LDL Cholesterol, Lp(a), or an APTTK clotting assessment may be ordered if liver function is affected.

4. Protect your baby during pregnancy If detected early, steps can be taken to prevent the virus from passing to the baby at birth.

For people with known risk factors

If you already have risk factors, your doctor may also recommend an Apo B test or a full cardiac checkup. This is because long-term liver disease can affect fat metabolism and raise cardiovascular risk over time.

Understanding your results

Result                                                                      What it means
Non-reactive (Negative)No Hepatitis B surface antigen detected. Normal.
Reactive (Positive)Hepatitis B surface antigen detected. Further testing needed.

A reactive result does not mean the worst. It means the next step is more investigation, not panic.

Our Story - A Lab Built on One Doctor's Passion

JDAR did not start as a big corporate chain. It started with one person who genuinely cared. Dr. (Mrs.) Urmil Goel, M.B.B.S., M.D. (Pathology), founded JDAR in 1983 with a simple but powerful belief - that patients deserve quality diagnostic care in a premium, comfortable setting. With over 40 years of hands-on experience in Hematology, Histopathology, and Clinical Pathology, Dr. Urmil Goel built this lab from the ground up. Her dedication is the reason JDAR holds NABL accreditation and meets international quality standards today.

In 2005, her son Dr. Saurabh Goel, M.D. (Microbiology), joined the laboratory. He brought with him fresh expertise in Microbiology and Immuno-Assays, along with a focus on faster report delivery and better patient communication. Under his leadership, JDAR embraced modern diagnostic technology while never losing the personal touch that made it special. Today, this Pathology lab in New Delhi is run by a family that does not just manage a business they take ownership of your health, report by report.
